When are Taxes Due? 2023 Filing & Extension Deadline

As law-abiding citizens, we must pay taxes on time so they can be used later for our benefit. However, keeping track of the tax dates with so much going on in our lives can be challenging.

Here is a brief overview of the important dates to help you remember when to file your taxes.

Everyone files their taxes from January to April, and the 15th of April is considered "tax day." In the US, the following business day is regarded as tax day if it is a weekend or holiday.

The tax day for 2023 is April 18, which is a Monday. Individual taxpayers, C corporations, and proprietors of small businesses can file their taxes at this time. The time will differ if you follow a different fiscal year.

Deadline for Paying Taxes

The payment deadlines stay the same if you apply for an extension. So you have to pay a late penalty of 0.5% of the taxes you owe each month, compared to 5% for late filing.

If you post your tax returns by snail mail, the IRS will consider them filed on time if you have addressed them correctly and provided proper postage. You can also e-file your returns before midnight on the tax filing date.

If you run a business where you have to pay quarterly taxes or estimated tax returns, the due dates are April 18, June 15, September 15, and January 15, 2024.

2023 Tax Extension Due Dates

You can file for an extension until the due date, so this year it is April 18, 2023. S Corps and partnerships can get an extension on 15th March, while C Corps can extend it till 18th April.

Tax Deadlines for 2023

Here are some of the crucial deadlines for this year.

  • 16th January 2023 is the fourth and final date for estimated quarterly tax payments.

  • Individuals can file it by 31st January 2023 and pay any remaining balance.

  • 31st January 2023 is the date for Form W-2 filing. You will have to fill out two forms for every employee you have- one for the IRS and one is the employee's copy.

  • If you work with independent contractors, you must also file Form 1099-NEC by 31st January 2023. You must fill out one copy for the IRS and one for the contractor.

  • 28th February 2023 is the last date for paper filing. If you miss it, you can file it electronically till 31st March 2023.

  • 15th March 2023 is the deadline for filing S Corporation tax with Form 1120-S and Partnership return with Form 1065. It is also the last date to apply for an extension.
